Marcona almond, Braised greens, Fresh cream

Expert Review

TL;DR
Single-origin Gokou cultivar. Tasting notes: marcona almond, braised greens, fresh cream. Worth trying just to recalibrate what premium matcha can taste like.
Overview
Gokou is rare at premium tier. People associate it more with high-end gyokuro than with matcha. Kettl sources this one as single-origin from Shirakawa.
Flavor
The almond note is real and unusual for matcha. It shows up as a nutty top layer over the standard cream-and-cooked-greens base. Umami is one notch below the maxed-out koichas (4 instead of 5), but the trade is aromatic complexity. No bitterness or astringency.
Verdict
This one is better as usucha. The almond and cream notes are clearer thin. Thicken it into koicha and they get muffled.

Single cultivar Gokou is so creamy 🌿
Gokou as a cultivar is supposed to be richer/sweeter than other Uji greens and oh my goodness Kettl really lets it shine. The mouthfeel is buttery, almost like shortbread?? Whisked usucha and the finish lingers forever. This is becoming one of my Sunday morning matchas alongside my Marukyu staples ✨🍵
