Single-origin Asahi from Shirakawa/Uji; intensely umami, seaweed/nori character, buttery sweetness

Premium Hatsu-Mukashi No.1 - image 1

Expert Review

By Matcha Spot Team

TL;DR

Single-origin Asahi from Shirakawa, Uji's top growing area. Heavy umami, nori, buttery sweetness. Priced as an occasion matcha.

About Shirakawa

Shirakawa is the small Uji sub-region that has produced most of the matcha winning major competitions for the last decade. Tokichi's No.1 lot of the season is single-origin Asahi from there, and the price reflects that.

Flavor

Nori on the nose, creamy buttery sweetness on the palate, vegetal at the ceiling. Compared to Horii's Mumon (also Asahi), this one is much more rounded. Almost no bitterness, more cream than salt.

Verdict

Koicha only. Drinking a $20-per-gram matcha thin is not a good time.
