Prepared as
Few powders have become as synonymous with the matcha boom in the West as Rocky's Ceremonial Blend. You'll find it served in trendy LA cafes and posted all over social media. Perhaps this anticipation is why I felt a bit let down after finally trying it as usacha.
The first sip revealed the nutty, roasted flavor that Yame matchas are known for, yet it was far more subtle than other powders I've tried from the region. This quickly faded to a pronounced and enjoyable sweetness, followed by a smooth finish with no trace of bitterness whatsoever.
As I finished my bowl, I realized the finish of each sip left me disappointed. It was almost *too* smooth and neutral. In other words, it lacked wow factor. I found myself wanting more depth - be it umami, astringency, even some refreshing bitterness.
Rocky's Ceremonial Blend is still a high quality, respectable matcha. But at $1.80/gram, I likely won't be buying more tins. There are more enjoyable powders and better values in Rocky's lineup, such as Single Cultivar Okumidori.

I tried Rocky's ceremonial blend around 3 years ago and still remember how surprised I was. I had drank mostly grocery store brands at that point. The flavor was so much tastier and more pure. It has great umami and does have some nuttiness that I like. I still enjoy it from time to time, but I feel like the price has gotten way too high. I'd rather spend that much on experimenting with new matchas!
