Expert Review

By Matcha Spot Team

TL;DR

Velvety more than punchy. Kanbayashi Shunsho's flagship koicha, and the texture is the part to notice.

Overview

Kanbayashi Shunsho is one of the older Uji houses, and Koicha Hatsumukashi is the top of their current matcha range. Texture, more than peak intensity, is what makes it distinct.

Flavor

Sweetness arrives early and sustains; umami sits underneath rather than fronting. Velvety in the bowl. No bitterness or astringency.

Verdict

Built for koicha. It takes thick preparations gracefully and doesn't get aggressive when you push the powder ratio.
