Near-apex quality, deep layered umami and sweetness

Expert Review
By Matcha Spot Team
TL;DR
Most of Kanza's depth at about two-thirds the price. The Ippodo recommendation when you've decided not to go all the way to the top.
Overview
Kuon sits one shelf below Kanza in Ippodo's lineup. Ippodo's own staff tend to point regulars here when they're not sure Kanza is worth the jump.
Flavor
Deep umami and full sweetness. Slightly less of the maxed-out vegetal weight that Kanza has. This scores 4 on vegetal where Kanza scores 5, which is a real but narrow gap.
Verdict
Koicha works best. As usucha it's still good but starts to feel like overkill. If you're whisking thin, save the money and buy a tier lower.

Radiation
* Brand-wide result: Ippodo's teas were tested annually (2011 to 2020) for radioactive cesium by a third-party lab (Japan Food Inspection Corporation), with none detected; not a measurement specific to this product.
Figures are reported by the linked source and shown in standardized units. Matcha Spot does not independently verify lab results.
