Expert Review

By Matcha Spot Team

TL;DR

Marukyu Koyamaen's top koicha. Won the Leafies 2022 gold. Extreme umami, full vegetal, no bitterness.

Overview

The Leafies 2022 gold is one of the few competition results in the matcha world worth weighing, and Kiwami Choan won it. The depth is more layered than the rest of Marukyu Koyamaen's lineup at the same price tier.

Flavor

Heavy umami, pronounced sweetness, full vegetal, no bitterness or astringency to speak of. It tastes like the Marukyu Koyamaen house aim, with every dial pushed up.

Verdict

Koicha-first. Drink it thick to get what you paid for.

okay but also wow 🌿

Choan was my anniversary splurge with my partner and we both agreed it was so worth it. The umami is rich without being heavy?? It's like silk in the mouth. We drank it as koicha mostly but I tried it as usucha once and even then it was beautiful. Marukyu Koyamaen really cannot miss for me 💕

Cleanest umami in my pantry

Choan tastes the way a really good koicha should. Velvety, no rough edges, and zero of that "is this bitter or am I just imagining it" thing some ceremonial matchas pull. Sweetness is there but not in the way of the savory. I think it's the closest thing I've had to Tenju in terms of mouthfeel for slightly less money.
