Really good and reasonable price!
I tried Kettl Hakusan at a friend's house and loved it immediately so I bought a can for myself. It has a nice smooth and rich flavor. There is not a ton of umami when mixed with milk as a latte but enough for me. It's more noticeable when prepared with just water. I don't like overwhelming umami. It also has some bitterness but it is also not overwhelming and I feel like it complements the flavor really well. Also the price is pretty reasonable for good matcha these days. $1 per gram beats the fancy cafe any day of the week!
Ogura umami does the work
I was curious about Hakusan because it's sold by Kettl, but produced by Yamamasa Koyamaen. The umami actually comes through here. 2 grams at 175F in about 3oz and the vegetal note is clean, with a low-bitterness finish that isn't overpowering. Sweetness is low, but the umami has enough body to carry the cup without it. My honest gripe with Kettl's Hakusan is it lacks the "depth" I like. A single-cultivar from Ogura would probably have been better, but the added blend of unknown others seems to have blunted it. It's decent, but doesn't blow me away.
