TL;DR

A quality mid-tier Yame matcha with nutty notes and a subtle seaweed leaning umami flavor.

Kettl’s Soukou has a pleasant grassy aroma when first brewed, along with a deep green color.

On first sip, I taste the roasted nutty notes commonly associated with Yame matchas. The umami leans a bit toward dried seaweed, which was a unique flavor paired with the nuttiness. There’s no bitterness whatsoever.

The astringency is quite low, which actually leaves me wanting more. The flavor drops off quickly, lacking the mouth-coating, lingering richness and depth of Kettl’s higher end Yame mactchas (e.g. Hibiki).

Despite this, it’s great as a budget-friendly Yame option. I’d recommend it as a daily usacha for those that like the traditional Yame characteristics.

My latte default for now

Soukou is what I make when I don't want to think. It's nutty in the way I expect Yame to be without being super complex. I use it almost exclusively for lattes because the price is friendlier than Hinata or Hukuju. If you only have a budget for one Kettl matcha and you're going the latte route, this is the one IMO.
