Expert Review

TL;DR

The top of Marukyu Koyamaen's range. Hand-picked tencha, koicha-built. The bowl you save for sessions that matter.

Overview

Marukyu Koyamaen makes their apex koicha from hand-picked tencha. Almost everything else at this tier is machine-harvested, even at the top. That detail is most of what justifies the price gap between Tenju and Kiwami Choan.

Flavor

Layered umami, sweetness that arrives slowly rather than up front, vegetal at the ceiling. Velvety in the bowl. The Marukyu Koyamaen profile is at its clearest here.

Verdict

Koicha only. If you're whisking Tenju thin, you've made a pricing error.

Tenju koicha is my happy place 💚

I save this for Sundays only because I cannot afford to drink Tenju every day 😭 but oh my goodness the koicha?? Velvety, deep, the kind of matcha that makes you close your eyes when you sip it. The color alone is gorgeous, like jewel-toned green. If anyone is wondering whether to splurge I will say yes ✨

Worth the koicha price tag

If you're going to spend Tenju money you should drink it as koicha. Otherwise what are we even doing here. The umami is so dense it almost coats the back of your throat. As usucha it's borderline too rich, which I realize is a weird complaint, but it kind of is. I went through 20g of this in two weeks and don't regret it, even though my bank account does.
