Satsuma, Kagoshima Matcha

Satsuma is the western half of Kagoshima Prefecture, on the southern tip of Kyushu. Among the newer matcha regions in Japan and one of the fastest-growing.

Kagoshima's warm climate allows earlier harvests and higher yield than the traditional Honshu regions, and modern farms here have leaned into mechanization and scale. The result is matcha that is widely available and competitively priced, with a flavor profile lighter and slightly sweeter than Uji.

Saemidori is a common cultivar in Satsuma fields. Its bright green color and gentle umami match well with the local growing conditions. For high-volume use in lattes or culinary applications, Kagoshima matchas often hit the right balance of price and quality.
